Ma per la tua copiosa misericordia, nel tempo che piacque a te, vedo che hai mostrato la sovrabbondanza della tua bontà, così che la città è diventata rifugio e soggiorno di quelli che ti conoscono e danno gloria al tuo nome e spandono profumo di vita santa, diretta dottrina e buona fama in tutto il popolo cristiano. Io ti prego dunque, o Signore Gesù Cristo, Padre della misericordia, di non guardare alla nostra ingratitudine, ma di ricordare solo l'abbondanza della tua bontà, che le hai dimostrato. Sia sempre questa città, terra e abitazione di quelli che ti conoscono e glorificano il tuo nome benedetto e glorioso nei secoli dei secoli.

I pray you therefore, O Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercy, not to look at our ingratitude, but to remember only the abundance of your goodness, that you have shown. This city may always be land and home of those who know you and glorify your name, blessed and glorious  in the centuries of the centuries. Amen."

Il dodicesimo giorno del settimo mese dell'anno 1995, Marcello Ciai  profetizzò su Assisi. Due anni prima del terremoto, come il profeta Amos (Amos 1:1), Marcello ebbe la profezia per Assisi, che diceva fra l'altro :

Ascolta Assisi,
non chiudere le tue orecchie; non rigettare la mia voce. Ascolta terra un tempo benedetta, anche se Francesco e Chiara si presentano dinanzi a me, io non posso far più nulla per fermare la mia ira. Sì, mi sono stancato di avere pietà, mi sono stancato di sentire predicar pace e misericordia.
....
Guai ad Assisi, ad Assisi dove si accampò Francesco e vinse.
Come un fantasma dalla polvere parlerà la moltitudine degli stranieri che pistano la tua terra.
Continuino le tue feste, continuino, tremerà, fenderà la tua terra...

On the twelfth day of the seventh month of the year 1995, Marcello Ciai prophesied on Assisi. Two years before the earthquake, Amos the prophet had the same - (Amos 1:1) the prophecy for Assisi said among other things :

Listen Assisi,
don't shut your ears;
don't reject my voice.
Listen earth once blessed, even if Francis and Clare were to stand before me, I can do no more to withdraw my anger. Yes, I am tired
of having pity, I am tired of hearing the preach on peace and mercy.

Così parlò Cristo Crocifisso a San Francesco ottocento anni fa.
Non al Papa Innocenzo III di allora, ma a un uomo piccolo e insignificante il Signore dette l'incarico di riparare la Chiesa. Oggi come ha detto lo stesso Presidente della C.E.I., Cardinale Bagnasco, la Chiesa si trova in "un' infame emergenza" dopo i rovinosi scandali. Noi vogliamo rivolgere l'attenzione e le nostre speranze su un'altro piccolo insignificante uomo di oggi, Massimo Coppo, che Dio ha chiamato proprio ancora ad Assisi.

"Francis, go and repair my church which, as you see, is all in ruins!"
So spoke the Crucified Christ to Saint Francis eight hundred years ago.
 Not to the then Pope Innocent III, but to a small and insignificant man the Lord gave the task to repair the Church. Today, as the same President of the C.E.I., Cardinal Bagnasco said, the Church finds itself in an "infamous emergency" after the disastrous scandals. We want to turn our attention and our hopes to another insignificant little man of today, Massimo Coppo, whom God has just called still at Assisi.

"Eco Sacro": quando Dio vuole attirare la nostra attenzione, Dio non sussurra una volta solo e poi va avanti. Il messaggio viene a noi in echi provenienti da molte fonti e in molte forme…

In Piazza San Pietro, la notte prima delle elezioni di Papa Francesco, l'eco si è alzato in maniera potentissima con un pellegrino a piedi nudi vestito di sacco, il suo nome è Massimo Coppo. Un devoto di San Francesco d'Assisi, Coppo, che vive in condizioni di povertà intenzionale (dormendo nei portici della basilica di Assisi), era venuto a piazza del Vaticano, la notte che ci siamo incontrati, a pregare per i cardinali del conclave e per la Chiesa stessa - che tutto sarebbe stato "guarito" dalla corruzione e disunione. "Spero che sarà un papa che è povero o che capisce i poveri", Coppo ha risposto quando ho chiesto chi sperava sarebbe stato il 266esimo Papa. "Molte persone sono povere e stanno diventando povere .... Un Papa che parla di eternità - del paradiso - e persino di inferno in un mondo a cui non piace questo". Questo mi raddrizza i capelli dietro sul mio collo.

Meno di 24 ore dopo, il cardinale Bergoglio - un Gesuita che ha fatto voto di povertà e vive una vita di austerità semplice nonostante il suo ruolo di un principe della Chiesa, un uomo che ha speso tutto il suo ministero consacrato per stendere una mano ai malati e agli impoveriti, emarginati e senza diritti della popolazione della sua nativa Argentina - entrò nei sandali di San Pietro e ha scelto Francesco come il nome con cui il mondo (e la storia) lo conoscerà. Avevo visto Coppo in piazza San Pietro, poche ore prima che il Papa Francesco apparisse sulla loggia centrale della basilica. "Buona sera, Massimo," ho detto mentre passavo accanto a lui, in ginocchio in preghiera su una chiavica, mentre gli stranieri guardavano stupiti e scattavano foto di lui. "Buona sera, signora», rispose lui, guardando verso di me da sotto il cappuccio di sacco, con dolci occhi di blu ghiaccio, dopo che il mondo aveva incontrato Papa Francesco che, come sapete, abbandonò il saluto liturgico formale scritto per lui e invece ha salutato il mondo con un semplice, informale "Buona sera". Il giorno dopo, il Papa Francesco predicò la sua prima omelia nella Cappella Sistina per i suoi fratelli cardinali. Egli ha respinto un testo preparato per lui in latino e ha parlato a braccio in italiano (senza note) e con coraggio sul peccato, il pentimento, il Diavolo, Gesù e la croce.

A parte lo Spirito Santo, che ci viene detto aleggia sopra i Conclavi guidando i cardinali mentre pregano in silenzio ed emettono i loro voti, Coppo potrebbe essere stato l'unico nella Città del Vaticano a non essere sorpreso da Papa Francesco…

"Sacred Echo": when God wants to get our attention, God doesn't just whisper once and move on. The message comes to us in echoes from many sources and in many forms…

In St. Peter's Square, the night before Pope Francis' election, the echo turned up most powerfully as a barefoot, sackcloth-wearing pilgrim named Massimo Coppo. A devotee of St. Francis of Assisi, Coppo, who lives in intentional poverty (sleeping under the porticoes of the basilica of Assisi), had come to the Vatican Square the night we met to pray for the cardinals in the conclave and for the church itself – that all would be "healed" from corruption and disunity. "I hope it will be a pope who is poor or who understands the poor," Coppo answered when I asked who he hoped the 266th pope would be. "Many people are poor and becoming poor.... A pope that speaks of eternity – of paradise – and even of hell in a world that doesn't like it." That makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

Less than 24 hours later, Cardinal Bergoglio – a Jesuit who has taken a vow of poverty and lives a life of simple austerity despite his role as a prince of the church; a man who has spent his entire ordained ministry reaching out to the sick and impoverished, shunned and disenfranchised people of his native Argentina – stepped into St. Peter's sandals and chose Francis as the name by which the world (and history) will know him. I had seen Coppo in St. Peter's square a few hours before Pope Francis appeared on the basilica's central loggia. "Buona sera, Massimo," I said as I walked past him kneeling prayerfully on a sewer grate while strangers gawked and snapped pictures of him. "Buona sera, signora," he replied, peering up at me from under his burlap hood with gentle, ice blue eyes, after the world met Pope Francis who, as you know, forsook the formal liturgical greeting scripted for him and instead greeted the world with a simple, informal "Buona sera". The next day, Pope Francis preached his first homily in the Sistine Chapel to his brother cardinals. He rejected a text prepared for him in Latin and spoke extemporaneously in Italian (without notes) and boldly about sin, repentance, the Devil, Jesus and the cross.

Apart from the Holy Spirit, which we are told hovers over papal conclaves guiding the cardinals as they silently pray and cast their votes, Coppo might have been the only one in Vatican City not surprised by Pope Francis…

We must offer them our hearts, not our money,” shouted the grey-bearded Coppo to applause and shouts of “Make him Pope, immediately!”. Disunity in the Church is one of many challenges faced by an institution plagued by a series of sexual abuse scandals and allegations of corruption. “The people are scared and panicked like sheep in the night when they think there is a wolf among them,” Coppo preached to the gathered crowd, who filmed him on mobile phones.

1) Massimo Coppo in missione penitenziale, nel luogo di preghiera creato al centro di Assisi in un ex vespasiano.
2) Il segno appeso sopra l'agnello è la lettera HE, dell’antico alfabeto semitico meridionale, misteriosamente connessa alla conversione di Marcello Ciai:
indica specificamente una strofa del Salmo 119 (118), un Salmo unico nel suo genere, in cui, in una costante tensione di amore e timore,
il servo del Signore chiede e ottiene che Dio gli riveli direttamente, nell'intimo del cuore, i suoi insegnamenti.
3) Agnello scolpito col pane pasquale nella tradizione ortodossa antica. Dio onnipotente si fa agnello in Gesù Cristo,
agnello portato al macello per amore nostro e morto in croce per accollarsi tutti i nostri peccati e riconquistarci il Paradiso.

lamb led to the slaughter for our love and died on the cross to bear all our sins and to reconquer to us the Paradise.

at the door of the toilette under the porticoes of the Basilica of Saint Francis, everything for love for us, for Assisi, for the Church and for all our tormented Humanity!

Non possiamo pensare ad Assisi
senza che ci vengano spontanee
sulle labbra, quasi fossero scritte per essa,
quelle dolci espressioni dell'inno liturgico:
"Gerusalemme, città celeste,
beata visione di pace!".
Assisi è visione di pace,
poema di glorie, oriente cristiano,
donde si è levato quel sole,
che tanta luce e calore di bene
ha irradiato sul mondo...;
se gli uomini risentono ancora
dell'influsso benefico di Francesco
e del suo Ordine,
il centro di tanto irradiante splendore
è l'Umbria verde, è Assisi,
dove tutto parla del suo Santo,
dove le valli, i monti, i campi fioriti
pare ripetano ancora l'eco della sua parola
e dei suoi canti infuocati d'amore,
per sollevare le anime vostre, diletti figli,
a pensieri di cielo per ravvivare
quella fede da cui dipende
l'orientamento di tutta la nostra vita.

without being spontaneously
on our lips, almost if they were written for it,
those sweet expressions of the liturgical hymn:
"Jerusalem, heavenly city,
blessed vision of peace!".
Assisi is vision of peace,
poem of glories, cristian east,

which with so much light and warmth of good

the beneficial influence of Francis
and of his Order,
the center of so much radiating splendor
is the green Umbria, is Assisi,

and of his burning songs of love,
